Welcome to The Consultancy Life, where we discuss all things ISO Management Systems Consultancy!
Whether you're contemplating a career in ISO consulting or seeking to understand how these systems can benefit your business, you're in the right place.
In this blog post, we’ll introduce you to ISO Management Systems Consultancy and explain how it can help businesses achieve their quality and environmental goals.
What is ISO Management Systems Consultancy?
ISO Management Systems Consultancy involves assisting organisations in implementing and maintaining International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) standards.
These standards, such as ISO 9001 (Quality Management) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), are internationally recognised frameworks designed to improve business processes and enhance operational efficiency.
As a consultant, your role is to guide businesses through the complexities of these standards, ensuring they meet the required criteria and achieve certification.
This process often involves assessing existing practices, identifying gaps, and providing recommendations for improvement.
Why ISO Certification Matters
ISO certification is more than just a badge of honour.
Take ISO 9001 and 14001 for example, it signifies a commitment to quality and environmental responsibility, which can significantly impact a business's reputation and operations. Here are some key benefits of ISO certification:
Enhanced Quality
ISO 9001 helps organisations improve their quality management systems, leading to more reliable products and services.
Last thing your clients need is to be throwing products away because they didn't come out the way they should have... or worse, a customer returns it!
Increased Efficiency
By standardising processes, businesses can streamline operations and reduce waste.
Do your clients ever feel like their business gets clogged up and certain points with unnecessary hold ups? - say goodbye to that!
Environmental Responsibility
ISO 14001 promotes sustainable practices and helps businesses minimise their environmental impact.
My clients are discussing how there is increasing pressure from their customers to become more environmental conscious - 14001 does that for you.
Customer Trust
Certification can boost customer confidence and open doors to new markets.
Like I said, its not just a badge of honour - but when your clients do wear it (on their website, email signature, document footer, company vehicles), they can do so knowing they've earned it and that their customers are receiving the standard they deserve.
Regulatory Compliance
ISO standards often align with legal and regulatory requirements, helping businesses stay compliant.
Are your clients compliant with all statutory and regulatory requirements? We bake it into their Management System - one less thing for them to have to worry about!

The Consultant’s Role
As an ISO consultant, you play a crucial role in the certification process. Your responsibilities typically include:
Assessment
Evaluating the current management systems of a business to identify areas for improvement.
Planning
Developing a tailored action plan to address gaps and implement ISO standards.
Training
Educating employees on the requirements of ISO standards and how to adhere to them.
Implementation
Assisting with the implementation of new processes and procedures.
Auditing
Conducting internal audits to ensure compliance with ISO standards and preparing for external audits.
How to Get Started in ISO Consultancy
If you're interested in becoming an ISO Management Systems Consultant, here’s a roadmap to help you get started (specifically ISO 9001 and 14001):
Education and Training
Obtain relevant qualifications and certifications in ISO standards. Many consultants hold certifications such as ISO Lead Auditor or ISO Implementer.
I went down the route of completing the ISO 9001 and 14001 Lead Auditor course with an approved International Register of Certified Auditors (IRCA) Chartered Quality Institution (CQI) trainer - Capable People - https://www.capablepeople.net
Experience
Gain experience in quality management or environmental management roles. Practical experience is crucial for understanding the challenges businesses face.
If you're someone that feels natural around policy and legislation and has an inherent drive for perfection - that's also just as important. You can always gain experience and learn along the way (thats the bit they don't normally tell you).
Networking
Build a network of contacts within the industry. Joining professional organisations and attending industry events can provide valuable connections.
LinkedIn is your friend here. As for professional organisations, I'm part of the Chartered Quality Institute (hence the fancy letters after my name).
Specialise
Consider specialising in a specific ISO standard or industry to differentiate yourself and provide specialised expertise.
This is the route I took. I left the Royal Air Force after a very successful 15 years of developing habits and routines around policy that lead me to become the Senior Manager for Quality.
This, coupled with my environmental experience overseas, lent itself naturally to specialising in ISO 9001 and 14001.
Stay Updated
ISO standards are periodically revised. Stay informed about the latest updates and changes to ensure your knowledge remains current.
An easy way I manage this is with a subscription to Quality World from the CQI and IRCA.

ISO Management Systems Consultancy is a rewarding field that offers the opportunity to make a significant impact on businesses by helping them achieve certification and improve their operations.
